Barr Geospatial Solutions

Utilities Risk Modelling Platform

2025

UX, Product design

Barr Geospatial Solutions is a leading provider of geospatial services using aerial LiDAR, imaging, surveillance and AI technology to help map assets and critical infrastructure across North America.

Utility companies provide essential services like electricity, natural gas, water, and sometimes telecommunications to the public. These companies are responsible for the generation, transmission, and distribution of these services, and they are subject to public regulation

I was involved in a 6 week discovery phase, resulting in a proof of concept to develop. Leading the design approach.

Background & Brief

Barr supplies wildfire risk information to infrastructure and utility companies across North America. This intelligence is currently delivered through offline systems, manual processes and static documentation.

Our role was to conduct discovery and develop a proof of concept which would deliver all current fire risk assessment capabilities in a more efficient, automated system; And providing live risk predictions which feed automated emergency response recommendations.

This phase aimed to address the following:

  • Define the core purpose and distill the intended impact of the platform

  • Identify key user needs and critical pain points

  • Design and build comprehensive prototype and proof of concept

  • Define a product roadmap and identify the MVP (Now); followed by Next and Later phases

  • Provide technical recommendations, information architecture, scalability considerations and go-to-market strategy

  • Outline cost estimates and considerations

Challenges

With the client based in Canada and the US, communication was restricted to limited times in the day.

The short timeline of 6 weeks required me to be prepared at each step of the way, and able to adjust, pivot and move rapidly.

As the project was a discovery and proof of concept, we were always treading the line of … trying to understand where the client is at to confirm the proposal we put together would be ?appealing?.
